Reading Tips

Be A Story Teller…

Did you know that HOW you read to your child is just as important as how often you read to them?

Research has shown that when we help our children become a “teller” of the story they are reading, their literacy skills and vocabulary greatly improve.

TIPS:

  • Ask Questions. Question your child about a picture or what they see. Get your child involved in the story being told.
  • Choose books with bright and colorful illustrations and minimal text.
  • Read picture books that illustrate simple sequence of events that they can follow.
  • Create Dialogue. Elaborate on the simple yes or no questions, instead- ask open ended questions that bring curiosity and conversation for their little inquisitive minds.
    • What is that monkey doing?
    • Why do you think he is doing that?
    • Where do you think they are going?
    • What do you think is going to happen next?
    • What would you do if that happened to you?

Our children love to model exactly how we say or do things, so remember to read with a full and energetic voice. Bringing fun and enthusiasm into our daily reading encourages our children’s love for reading and reading helps them learn and grow.

READ! READ! READ!
